When you come to the Animal Eye Center, your pet will be examined by one of our board-certified diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO).  Within the recent past, new knowledge, instrumentation and techniques in veterinary medicine have made it possible for specialist to receive advanced training in particular fields.  Specialists are now available to work with your referring veterinarian to help provide the highest level of patient care.  There are numerous specialty groups or boards recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).  Membership is gained after successfully completing a residency program and completion of written, oral and practical examinations.  There are currently less than 600 diplomates in the ACVO.

Beth Gibbins, DVM, Diplomate ACVO

Dr. Beth Gibbins is originally from Anniston, Alabama.  She received her B.S. in Biology from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina in 1992 and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University in 1996.  Following graduation, she practiced general small animal veterinary medicine.  It was during these years in general practice that a passion for veterinary ophthalmology developed.  In 2000, she returned to Auburn University and completed a one year veterinary ophthalmology internship followed by a three year veterinary ophthalmology residency.  In 2004, she joined the specialists at the Emergency and Specialty Animal Medical Center and founded the Animal Eye Center.  Dr. Gibbins is also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association, the Mid- States Veterinary Medical Association and the Jefferson County Veterinary Medical Association.   When not practicing ophthalmology, she enjoys spending time with her husband, her four sons, John, Michael, Charlie and Alex and her dogs Rocket and Skye.

Sony Kuhn, DVM, Diplomate ACVO

Dr. Sony Kuhn grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received a B.A. in Biology from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2006 and graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. After graduation, she completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle from 2010-2011 followed by a residency in Comparative Ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee from 2011-2014. She joined the Animal Eye Center in November 2018. Dr. Kuhn enjoys the species diversity that comes with veterinary ophthalmology. Her clinical interests include corneal and cataract surgery, as well as ocular manifestations of systemic disease. Dr. Kuhn played NCAA division 1 field hockey as an undergraduate, and loves sports. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two children and crazy yellow Labrador named Dex.

Kathy Kelton, Licensed Veterinary Technician

Kathy “K.K.” Kelton is a licensed veterinary technician and a member of the Veterinary Ophthalmic Technician Society.  K.K. graduated from Snead State Junior College Veterinary Technician Program in 1992 and entered small animal private practice.  In 1999, Kathy joined the Emergency and Specialty Animal Medical Center as a veterinary technician.  In 2004 when Dr. Gibbins founded the Animal Eye Center, Kathy brought her years of experience and dedication to the profession to our practice.  Kathy has two children, Will  and Kaila.  She has two dogs (Ellijay and Cooper) and enjoys long-distance cycling.

Kristen Riordan, Licensed Veterinary Technician

Kristen was born and raised here in Birmingham.  She worked at a small animal private practice for 2 ½ years before joining our team in February 2016.  In May 2016, Kristen graduated Magna Cum Laude from Jefferson State Community College with an Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology.  She passed her national board exam and Alabama state board exam in September 2016 to become a L.V.T. (Licensed Veterinary Technician).  At an early age, Kristen always knew she would want to be around and help animals. She also occasionally works shifts with the emergency service in our building. She currently has two rescue dogs, Holly (pictured above) and Willow. Outside of work, Kristen enjoys watching movies and college football.

Lindsay Miller, Licensed Veterinary Technician

Lindsay joined the Animal Eye Center in November 2018. She has over 20 years of experience in the veterinary field, starting as a kennel technician when she was 14 years old. She graduated from Snead State Junior College Veterinary Technician Program in 1998 and became a licensed veterinary technician later that year. She is married and has two sons, Davis and Dylan. She has ten dogs and loves dachshunds (including Stewart, pictured above). In her free time, Lindsay enjoys spending time with family, reading and running.

Linda Sikes, Receptionist

Linda was born in Metropolis, Illinois, and at the age of 8 moved to Tarrant, Alabama.  As a young adult, she lived and worked in Mississippi and Texas in the medical field for 30 years.  She moved back to Tarrant in 2015 and earned her degree in business management from Brown Mackie College in 2017.  Linda has always loved animals and meeting new people.  She became our full-time receptionist in May 2016.
